The Human Curtain Call

‘All the world’s a stage
and all the men
and women merely players’ – Shakespeare, As You Like It

Here we are audiences
To the miscasting of society,
The bum notes, the faux pas,
The backdrop play actors
Brought hither to the mountainous role.
Where amateurs claim the proscenium,
Fumbling poetry and slurring song.
Here, in the stalls of the theatre
Artists are no more.

My place is the shadow box
Amidst the aisles, others stand and go.
Dismissal, disgust – these are
The faces of mirrors
Who deny their reflections.
My place is above, surmounting this facade
Of debauchees that sneer the cabaret.
Here in the stalls of the theatre
I sit with tidbits, watching ruin.
Here in the shadow box
My place is above.

Inspired in equal measures by V for Vendetta (A. Moore, D. Lloyd) and As You Like It (Shakespeare)
